Categories Plague Us with the Requirement to Fit In
Posted By Industrial Web Solutions Marketing Team on August 6, 2009

Listing categories have a purpose. They tell a buyer the type of service or products you offer. But if they happen to be the only way available to a seller to reach his intended buyer then he has to be listed in all applicable categories in order to adequately cover his bases. So the initial process usually involves the seller searching for his product in an engine or directory he wants to be included in so he can discover the categories that best match what he has to offer. And if his products or services are applicable in more than one category he most likely will have to pay a separate charge for each category in which he wishes to be listed. Ouch!
Industrial Web Search recognized this predicament and decided to do away with the category requirement altogether. Categories exist but are not integral to the search experience. Instead the search engine employs content tagging, where the seller chooses words and phrases, called tags, to identify his products and services to buyers. When a buyer types in the product or service he is looking for he is helped out by a tool that offers him a list of tags within the system that best match what he wants and have been associated by the seller with what he offers. No more fitting in. The seller, for all intents and purposes, gets to tell the buyer directly what he can give him.
