Manufacturing Up in July! New Orders Index Highest Since Dec 2004

BuyNowYessirree! The August 2009 Manufacturing ISM Report on Business® indicates that July was a good month for many although not all manufacturers. The report notes specifically that “inventories have been reduced for 40 consecutive months and supply chains will have to re-stock to meet this new demand.” Let’s take a closer look at where the orders are occurring.

  1. Textile Mills
  2. Paper Products
  3. Printing & Related Support Activities
  4. Miscellaneous Manufacturing
  5. Apparel, Leather & Allied Products
  6. Electrical Equipment
  7. Appliances & Components
  8. Computer & Electronic Products
  9. Wood Products; Chemical Products
  10. Fabricated Metal Products
  11. Plastics & Rubber Products
  12. Transportation Equipment
  13. Machinery

Are you represented here? If so, then you owe it to yourself to do the things necessary to ensure you are getting your share of those new orders. Now is definitely not the time to be complacent about your average or poor performing website, for example, one that isn’t designed to be your 24/7 top sales executive. But now is the time to effectively reach out to your target buyer groups and re-position your marketing to meet the specific needs of this particular buying cycle. DO IT NOW!

Things You Can Do on Your Own to Get Started:

  1. Reach out to past and existing customers to discover what projects they are involved in
  2. Search the internet and read industry journals to discover who’s doing what and who may need what you offer
  3. Take advantage of the knowledge you learned from your research and branch out into new markets
  4. Initiate targeted email campaigns that are highly focused on offering a very specific product/service to very targeted groups of buyers
  5. Establish a rewards-based referral program (but for heaven’s sake don’t rely exclusively or even predominantly on referrals! Dangerously passive approach!)
  6. Look at your competitors to learn who they are targeting

Put the stats to work for you! Actively search and pursue opportunities, which may be very different today than they have been in the past. If you have been the steadfast tin soldier dutifully holding the line, now is the time to advance. The opportunities are out there and you can take advantage of them!

“Dieu et mon droit! – Forward!”
