Re-Positioning Online to Meet New Market Needs

GlobalSpec’s 2009 Economic Outlook Survey points to the areas industrial respondents identified as receiving their attention despite the economic recession. Among the areas where top engineers will be spending more time and effort include:
- entering new markets
- researching future projects
- projects to save energy (50%)
- projects to reduce waste/scrap (48%)
- projects to reduce quality rejects (47%)
- new product design & development
As GlobalSpec points out, suppliers may be able to capitalize on this opportunity by positioning their products and services to fulfill the needs of these project types. Before making any changes to your website copy though, find out what your customer base is up to. The easiest thing to do is send an email and ask. You may also be able to learn what they are up to by reading their newsletters or news posted at their site, or do a search on the internet to see if another publication has reported their activity or maybe that of their competitor.
Once you are certain of the direction your customers or target buyer groups are going then you can either add web pages to specifically address how you can help them, including case studies, white papers, and specific product information sheets, or you can initiate a targeted email campaign that points buyers to the sections of your site where they can find the information, services or products they will need for their project.
