Businesses of every variety and size, including popular radio programs, major corporations, and foreign governments are using the online social messaging tool Twitter to make announcements and communicate with customers and the public in real-time. A post is called a tweet. According to Wikipedia, the Israeli government was the first to use Twitter to hold a worldwide press conference.

What has this to do with you, you ask? Think of Twitter as a public relations tool. Perception in the marketplace is a big deal to many companies. Midland Steel uses Twitter to announce what it is currently up to. Professionals use it to ask for help finding something they need such as a Supply Chain Advisory professional in the Oil & Gas industry in Houston. What could you tweet? Announce what you’re doing. Share a solution to a problem you just solved. Announce a recent accomplishment, such as a certification or an award. Comment on a bill that may help/hurt your industry. Check it out at www.twitter.com.

Sign up and let customers know to look for your tweets. Encourage them to sign up and follow you. It’s a free service and very useful for public relations.
